OK, I understand Boston isn't the most college sports-mad city, but which college teams would be more prominent? In which sports are these schools more popular? I can't imagine Bostonians getting too mad about UMass Amherst...

I would imagine Harvard being more popular than the other college teams in this city; after all, Harvard does have some success in football and basketball, despite playing in a lower division than Boston College.

College sports don't matter at all in Boston. Pro sports matters. College matters. But not college sports. That being Said, Harvard and BC are most popular. Harvard for basketball and BC for football, at the moment.

This is true. The reality is outside of the hockey clique, there is no college sports scene. The only time there really was outside of hockey was Flutie era BC football.

If you've lived in SEC, B10, etc town, you'll be just shocked out little it matters here.

It is not a big northeast thing in general. I lived in NYC for many years and was amazed out how little college sports mattered.

That being said, I think BC has the best teams and the most avid fans.

Always fun to go to the Harvard versus Yale game too. And the Frozen Four Tourney is always well attended.

I don't know how anyone could root for a school they didn't go to.

It seems many from this area agree with me.

College hockey seems the most popular because the teams are at the top of NCAA and there are a lot of local alumni.

I do enjoy watching some NESCAC football though.

BC is the biggest college football team in New England, game day atmosphere is about on par with a high school divisional playoff game in Ohio. I've gone to Harvard games because every time there's usually some promotion like "free for teachers today" or "free if you live in Brighton Allston or Cambridge" etc. I've never seen anyone confirm these things, they just let you in. You can go sit in the front row if you want, the games I've been to have been maybe 1000 people. Probably less.

I don't get that. What about people who went to D3 schools but are big sports fans? Are they just going to sit out the college scene entirely?

Why are people fans of pro teams they never played for, made up of players that come almost solely from places other than where they currently play?

I went to the school(s) I root for, but it is easy. First, most of the big programs are state schools. So if you grew up in Alabama, it is easy and natural to grow up rooting for that team. Even if you didn't go to school there later.

Second, many times these things run in families. I went to UW for school, and I know one family (and this isn't that unusual), both parents here went to UW and have effectively indoctrinated their kids into liking them. Kids usually root for the teams their parents root for (no different than pro sports).

Third, if you live in a true college town of one of these schools, it just gets under your blood. I moved to Madison for a job, not school, and within a couple of years I found myself following the team. It's just infectious.
