Hello all,
I'm trying to figure out if West Roxbury might be a good fit for me. I currently live in Newton, but am sadly selling my home due to recent divorce. I am exploring areas to purchase a new home outside of Newton solely due to housing prices and RE taxes. I would appreciate an insights on the following:

Commute/Accessibility - I am looking for a job and will most like work in either Cambridge or Waltham. For anyone who is commuting to these areas: where are you going, how long does it take, and at what time of AM/PM?

Off Leash Dog Walks - are there any wooded areas within WRox where a dog can be run off-leash, ideally wooded trails. I do not mean enclosed dog parks, like the one on Common St in Dedham, as my dog doesn't get the exercise he needs at this kind of park.

Doggy Day Care - any good ones in the area?

Lifestyle for single middle aged woman ... the data on this website indicate that the area has a mixed population wrt age, marital status, etc. but I've had the impression that WRox is mainly young families who've just moved in and older seniors who've lived there a very long time.

Appreciate any informed perspectives from current residents - thank you!

Why only West Roxbury? A west roxbury to Cambridge commute would be awful. Waltham would be a little bit easier though youd still have to deal with 128 traffic.

Why aren't you looking at places like Waltham, Watertown, Belmont, etc. The commute would be easier.

Why don't you wait to see where you are working before you decide. If you work in Waltham, you might as well live in Waltham. If in Cambridge, maybe look in Medford. If you work near the T, Quincy would be an option too. All are better than W Roxbury for commuting.

I live in Roz and commute to Waltham. Its a breeze getting in at 6:30 am, coming home is a different beast. 128 is a nightmare starting at 1:00 PM

Cutting through Newton is not a bad option.

As for a single 50 Yo.... I would sat Roslindale may be the better option. It seems everyone in W. Rox has already achieved their 2.3 kids goal and have the fence, yard, dog

We have a friend who lives in Jamaica Plain. She works in Cambridge. She had a Christmas party, and many neighbors were retirees who moved from places like Newton. I know you're not a retiree, and you asked about West Roxbury, not JP, but that might be something to consider. Our friend is 40ish and single and really likes living there. There seems to be a good mix of people.

Good luck!

People let their dogs run off leash at millennium park in West Roxbury. There is a kayak landing for the pups to swim from and quite a bit of forest to scamper through (or hide in . . . if you're my ******* misbehaving coonhound and you want to force another dog walker to quit.)

Thanks for all the replies, particularly the ones that address my questions (@GeePee, @such sweet thunder).

I am familiar with all of the towns suggested as alternatives, but have specific reasons for asking about WRox (housing quality in my price range, proximity to family on South Shore, etc.).

West Rox is a fine place to live. The Center is nice with plenty of bars and restaurants for a single woman. The commute you are asking about is not too bad if you learn the brookline-newton short cuts. PM me for a good realtor in the area...

Cambridge wouldn't be as bad but a Waltham commute would be rough. While not a robust scene really, there are older singles there. Your best bet would be getting involved through the local churches and other organizations, rather than the small number of pubs that cater more to DINKs, townies and younger folk.
