As a Southern CT resident, I agree that the Merritt is probably the most scenic. If you are not pressed for time, switch out from the Merritt to 95 in Milford and follow 95 along the CT shoreline. Beware of afternoon traffic. I love the Merritt except when commuting home and seeing nothing but a never ending line of cars up and down the hilly terrain in front of you. haha.

I find 84 to be quite boring but I'm sure it's a quicker route with less traffic.

84 is more boring but, I think, faster. Love the Merritt with those hills and bridges. It's interesting because it's fairly straight but with the gentle rolling hills, so it's just up and down, up and down. It's like a much less extreme parkway version of San Francisco.

I don't like the Merritt at night. Very confusing with all the headlights.

I make the drive from Boston to NYC every month, I stay on I-95 and I average about 4 hours which includes a stop for gas or a bite to eat. I've taken the route through Connecticut (84) which saved a few minutes and had more options for stopping to eat. You'll see more diners and such rather than being limited to McDonald's along 95.

To be something of a contrarian here, I find the 684 to 84 route more scenic than the Merritt. The Merritt is pretty but has few views; mostly you're going through the woods. 684 and especially 84 have big views out over hills, the occasional river, and yes, the Waterbury view is great and the approach into Hartford makes Hartford seem more exciting than it really is. I believe it's 8 or 10 miles longer, however, between New York and Hartford than taking either the Merritt-Wilbur Cross or 95 and 91.

I drive to FFLD county often and just use 95. But I live south of Boston now so that makes sense!

When I was living in Newton, I used to go down 90/84/91/95 and back up just 95. Just to spice things up a bit! I find both ways are pretty much the same time. If you stay 95, you won't have any tolls. Although - 84 and 91 are getting pretty jazzy with all those VIP billboards these days!
