Elmwood is a younger, hip area of the North Side due to the proximity to Canisius College and UB along with maybe a couple others.
Elmwood's closer to Buff State (with its main street, Rockwell Road, intersecting Elmwood) than those other schools you mentioned.

Not all of the East Side is one giant "ghetto." There are a few nice places in the northeastern section, like the Bailey/Kensington area (I think those streets such as Davidson, Suffolk in parts, etc. aren't that bad).

I haven't been in Buffalo in almost three years, so some things may have changed, but lived there long enough to have a say about it.

You are right, not all the East Side is a ghetto. However, I worked over in Bailey Kensington area in the 1970s and was glad to move to N. Buffalo and in University Heights in the early to mid 1990s and was delighted to get out of there. It isn't a ghetto, but I can think of safer areas.

Yeah, you haven't been in Buffalo in almost three years. Buffalo is now on the top 25 most dangerous cities in America list and still rising. 3 years ago, it wasn't even in the top 35. I'm in Buffalo right now... Have been exploring the city since Friday. The two big gangs out here are Six Duece (Route 62, Bailey Ave.) and Goodyear (gang around Goodyear St.).

Believe me, the East Side is NOT a neighborhood you want to be driving through at night. Two nights ago I got lost driving north past the old Eletric Building downtown at around 9 PM. I took a left at a stop sign, then a right about 30 ft. down the street, bringing me on Main St. and the further north I went, the darker and more ghetto it got. I hit every red light just about and had to sit next to a car filled with spinners and thugs inside it staring at me the whole time. This was pretty much downtown Buffalo. I can't even imagine what it would have been like if I somehow drove into the deep section of th East Side.

Don't get me wrong, I love Buffalo. It's just not that safe.

To the OP, don't let me scare you away. You'll be fine, the North Side and Kenmore areas are extremely safe.
