Though i have seen more ingrounds than above grounds. The only thing I can figure is the harsh winters take their tolls on the above grounds. A pool is a very nice feature.

If I was thinking about getting a inground pool installed, what kinda $ am I looking at, estimate wise? Seems like there are pretty pricey.

I think I read somewhere that Buffalo has one of the highest percentages of pool ownership in the US.

From what I heard, the biggest cost in a pool is maintaining it, but I've never owned one, so I couldn't tell you.

Default lots of pools....

Even though I grew up here, when we moved back I was shocked by the unusually high number of pools, especially for a city with very cold Winters. One reason could be because that many other cities have "pool clubs" which are very nice membership-driven clubs you join that offer pool and tennis without the very high cost of a golf course and full-service club houses (they are all over DC and cost about $1,500 a season). Last Summer I searched all over to try and find a Pool Club and there are none around. In Buffalo, your only options are Country Clubs and public pools, which may be why so many people choose to put a pool in their back yard instead.

Yes here in Maryland the swim club thing is also popular, something my wife and I find interesting - compared to WNY where we grew up and there were always pools around, either in someone's yard or a town pool. We pay about $400 for the season at a nice place that has several pools, landscaping, trees, picnic areas, etc.

One fine summer memory is swimming at the quarry that is now the Spaulding Lake subdivision in Clarence. Before it became that, local kids would gather there on summer days, and scatter when the cops came. No beach, but nice clean, deep water you could dive off the rocks into.

Where in Maryland are you? We lived in Bethesda and loved it...we belonged to "Seven Locks Pool Club" there.

My sister in law just got a preformed fiberglass inground pool. When all was said and done (pool, filter, concrete, landscaping, fence) it was about 50K. Well worth every penny. I should mention she got top of the line, salt water filtration, etc.

Baltimore..the club is Padonia Park Club, in Timonium, about 15 miles north of Baltimore :-)

We got tired of going to the ocean beaches - Ocean City, Rehoboth, Cape May - they're all very nice but too much traffic, too crowded, and too expensive. That pretty much sums up this whole area, I guess!

Not many pools out by me in West Chicago Suburbs, but there are quite a few community pool and smaller water parks.

Did find one community pool. Ransom oaks subdivision. Looks to be some nice homes and a nice community. Though all the hub-bub about the clay and swamp is very concerning.

True about high pool ownership rates. Also boats. The reasoning is that folks are holed up for a long winter and take extra advantage of the summer months.
