hi forum -

I am moving from brooklyn to burlington, hoping to find a neighborhood that is quieter, less dense, and has a bit more nature. i do not have a car, and bike everywhere, so that would be an important logistical consideration for me as well. i am an artist and my aim is to get to a bit of a quieter city to focus and be out of the hustle and bustle. i also love vermont and am very excited to be a part of it.

any suggestions for me in terms of where to focus my search? i would be looking for a shared room as i wouldn't want to spend more than about 750 a month. i'd love to get a studio, but im not sure that would be possible.

thanks so much!

rachel

I would look in the new north end or the south end if you are restricting yourself to the City of Burlington. These are generally quiet suburban type neighborhoods. Stay away from the hill section and the old north end.

Because you are an artist I would recommend the new north end as well because it will be close to the lake. Keep in mind though that Burlington is a city, and I do not find it a particularly quiet and peaceful one. I actually found it easier in London to find quiet, because Burlington is a condensed, young, energetic little city. That is not to say it would not be a good choice for you- in fact, Burlington is incredibly popular with artists of all kinds. Would you consider Pine Street? The northern part of the street has more noise and is a little grittier, but it is not unsafe and it's where all the artists have their studios.

What type of quiet are you looking for? If you are looking for idyllic nature you would be better off in another VT town (or potentially over by Centennial woods to get a more natural environment, though that section gets its fair share of traffic and college noise.
