About 8 years ago when the phone book salesman tried to get me to upgrade my business ad in the yellow pages, I told him to cancel it and never come back. I realized that their prices were going up a lot every year and yet I didn't know anyone that used it. My new customers all came from my website and referrals. The guy went nuts and it came close to a fistfight before I got him out of the shop. Saved $1,500/month.
Since then, with smartphones people don't even use the computer that much to find businesses, with the phone they get reviews, directions and hours all from the car.
In Seattle the city passed an "opt out" law when they discovered that it cost $350,000/year to recycle them and most were coming in as soon as they were delivered. They are charging the publishers $0.14 each now as a disposal fee.
I get requests a few times a week at work.I get many elderly people who are more comfortable with the old method. While the majority of people use smartphones etc, the old school methods remain. And some people lose their phones or do not bring their laptops/tablet and request one as well.
I'm with Rational -- I find it very trying to find something online, especially when I am looking up a category and not a specific business. Like when I looked for florists when my mom was sick. I needed one close to where she was and all I got was page after page of NOT any where near there... very annoying. I finally called my sister.
yeah sometimes Im in a hurry and dont want to wait to turn on the laptop and get logged in....plus I can look at a lot of different places at once.
Doesn't always work though, if I know I am gonna have to map quest something to get directions then Ill go online
I clearly observed the decline in significance of yellow page/phone books to a business. More and more customer's as well as business owners prefer to use online directories especially when they are targeting not just the local market but international market as well.

I drop mine in the recycle bin as soon as they arrive.

So I keep my phone books.
That's what google local is for. I dump mind as soon as it hits the driveway.I haven't used one for years.
