PG&E installed a SMART meter at my home about 7 months ago. I was on their Balance Plan and paying $387 a month, every month since last Dec 2009. I just got off the Balance Plan, and my 1st bill is $287 for July. And, since I can view my energy useage online, I have removed any electrical device not needed (HDTV, freezer, computer(s), etc.). And, I only do cooking and laundry during 2AM~6AM and 8PM~10PM. My AC is required as needed (set at 72 degrees), any hour of the day since the outside temperature gets up to and over 100 degrees almost everyday. I will be watching to see if I can keep my PG&E bill under $300 a month with the SMART meter installed.

So apparently some subscribers' bills spike way up while others' don't. Wonder what mine's going to do? I dread the rollout of those new meters, as my mechanical meter is very old and probably slow.

Just be prepared to remove/turn off anything that is not needed/required, because the power company will charge you the maximum if they can. That is why I consider my AC and refrig the only things that are "needed", not a "want" in my home.

My smart meter was installed last week. So far, the smart meter is saying that I am using a lot more electricity per day. And the thing about it, there is one less person living in my home this month. My electricity usage has not changed. Only thing that changed is there is one less person living at my home. Common sense would tell you that the electricity bill should be lower because of that one less person. WTF?

My mistake, I found out today that my smartmeter is working correctly. I added the days wrong and so far the electricity use is normal. I do not have any complaints so far on how the smartmeter is reading my electricity usage.

There was no appreciable difference when they switched us over to the smart meter. A lot of people were switched over right before the rate increase went into effect and that combined with the usual increased usage during the heat of summer gave people the impression the meters were over charging.

Randy, what do you pay per kwh ? I pay .17 cents per kwh. So far i have used 3 kwh in the past 13 1/2 hrs. My neighbor has used 7 but she leaves her lights on all night. The meters are behind my home so i can go out & read them easily.

I was wrong. I pay tier one prices of 9 cents per KWh. Tier 2 is .11 & tier 3 & 4 is .18.
