I thought it interesting that Kamala Harris, the new state attorney general, ran on an anti-death penalty pledge. Also Jerry Brown, the new governor, and Gavin Newsom, the new lieutetant governor publically voiced opposition to capital punishment. The three liberal Democrats won in spite of their stance against the death penalty.

Do you think California voters are ready to end capital punishment and close down the death rows at San Quentin and other state prisons?

Capital punishment is on life support in this state, and they're about to pull it off the ventilator.

I understand that doctor's won't participate as the law requires and that the formula of 3 drugs to execute the individual may cause some pain in the process. California has put to death 13 people since 1976 yet the death rows house close to 700 people. Even murderers like Charlie Manson and Richard Ramirez are no closer to being executed than they were when they entered prison decades ago.

Manson isn't on death row and hasn't been since the State Supremes abolished the DP in 1972. His sentence was automatically commuted to life, which is why he's housed at Corcoran rather than Q.

Nah! The death penalty in CA is alive and well. It's death by old age and natural causes.

And Surly, Manson is serving a life without sentence.

As for Ol' Krusty, Nuisance and Kamala, the will of the people be damned. They're enlightened and know what's best for you. Kinda like the administration in D.C.

Perhaps it would do you well to listen to your betters.

Well, when they show up, perhaps I shall. Either way, talk is cheap.

His (her?) post was sarcasm. (IMO)

This is not true. She said that she was personally against the death penalty but that she would execute (heh) the law.

I'd argue that none (actually not too sure of Harris's politics aside from the positions related to the justice system and environmental laws) are very liberal--more pragmatic than anything else.

Attitudes toward things like same-sex marriage and legal pot have shifted seismically but Californians seem to be perennially fond of capital punishment. I'm sick of most propositions but if the legislature won't outlaw the death penalty I would definitely support one that does.
