I just moved to the Peninsula and will be working at Redwood Shores. Which neighborhoods should I avoid for security reasons? ie : East Palo Alto.
With a budget of $1200 for a studio or a 1 bedroom, which places should I be looking into?
What websites should I be looking at besides craigs, forrent.com and apartments.com?

Avoid East Palo Alto, east Menlo Park and east Redwood City. Since you're working in Redwood Shores, try to find a place there and shorten the commute. Redwood Shores is a nice, safe place. Belmont and San Carlos are also good places to move to. Check the local newspapers (SF Chronicle, San Mateo County Times, Redwood City Daily News) for apt. rentals.

I also work in Redwood Shores, I live in Belmont on Carlmont Dr., there are plenty of apartments on Carlmont Dr., Lake Rd, Continentals Way, and Mulberry Ct., and the rent varies from $1000 - 1300 for a 1 bedroom, I pay 1295. I just saw on craiglist that my apartment complex is renting out a 1 bedroom for $75/month LESS than what I pay. I like the place so far, moved in June. Usually it takes me 12 minutes to get to work or so, but it can be as much as 20 minutes sometimes, or as little as 7 . There are some apartment complexes in Belmont on the other side of El Camino that are even closer to Redwood Shores.

I used craigslist, and rent.com mostly to find places.

Redwood Shores itself adn Foster city are probably too high in rents for your budget.

Thank you so much! I found a place in belmont for $1200 at 800 sq feet. The view is amazing and its only a 3 mile drive to work! Thanks so much humboldtrat and cardinal2007.

I've lived in both East Palo Alto and Belmont, in addition to other Peninsula towns... and if security is your main issue, you made a good choice. I personally loved my time in EPA, but I'm weird like that - I'd rather have some "flavor" and excitement, over a boringly safe/clean suburb. But anyway, Belmont is a very nice town, and I think you'll be quite happy there. If you want good food, try some of my favorites - Van's on the Hill, Caprino's, Village Host Pizza, Thai Time, Piacere, and Kabul's Afghan Cuisine (last three are in San Carlos). If nothing else, they have some great restaurants in that area!

I'll definitely look those places up! I'm going to stick with safe for now ... the drive back from work is so gorgeous. It'll be hard to move out!

Default One more restaurant if you're interested

Shalizar (Persian cuisine) is re-locating from San Mateo to Belmont on El Camino. An EXCELLENT addition to the food choices in Belmont!
