I am just trying to get an idea of which coastal city or town you like the best and why. For example, a 22 year old guy like myself wouldn't thrive in the sleepy community of Morro Bay, but Pismo Beach and SLO just south of it is another story.

SLO wouldn't qualify as a beach town. Santa Barbara is probably what you're looking for. Carpinteria and Carlsbad are nice little towns, but too quiet for what you want.

The community of Pacific Beach in San Diego is great, especially for younger people. The nightlife is great with tons of bars and clubs. Lots of restaurants and cafe's to choose from. It's compact and easy to walk or bike around. Until a few months ago you could drink alcohol on the sand and it had a great party vibe. It still has a great vibe and there are always tons of people on the boardwalk. Also the women are really hot and good looking. If you are young, single, love having an active lifestyle by the beach then Pacific Beach is the place.

The north state beaches are so different from the south, it's really hard to choose since I love both the cold, foggy beaches and the warmer, palm tree styles in the South. For the North, I love Carmel. In the South, my vote would be a three-way tie between Del Mar/Solana Beach/Encinitas.
