1. Live inland.

2. Keep A/C in home off.

3. Get in car. Keep A/C off (maybe crack windows to avoid suffocation). Drive to beach.

4. Park car.

5. Run to water.

6.

Like someone said, the California Current keeps the water off the West Coast cold.

Even Hawaii is affected somewhat by the California Current to the point where it does get kinda cool in Hawaii compared to other tropical regions at the same latitude.

If the water was warmer (a la Florida), California wouldn't have the nice climate that we do have.

So, I'll take the colder water with the nice Mediterranean climate, thankyouverymuch!

You think the water in San Diego is cold? Never visit San Francisco then!

Fixed it for you. See English subjunctive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The climate is why we have the cold water off the coast. The wind causes the ocean currents.

As does the rotation of the earth.

The ocean of CA is not cold, drive up to Tahoe, take a long swim, drive back to the beach and dive in, it will feel rather balmy.

Yeah, that goes along with the weather too.

It depends where you are at and what time of the year. That stretch of coast from Monterey to about Ft Ross has sections where the water temperature tops out at around 54F in the fall. Most of Lake Tahoe is warmer than that by the end of July.

At any rate, the water is nothing close to balmy along most of the coast. It is tolerable south of Monterey County, but as you go north you won't find many people wading in the surf like you do around Cayucos.
