I am a 25 year old single male moving from Illinois to California and want a place on the beach. I would like the place to have a nice beach, active area, a college somewhat close. The problem is that I can't find very many rentals that are on the beach. I am looking to spend around $1500 a month. Could someone please help me out with this. Thanks in advance.

Kenneth.

Go South not West. You will not find what you want here. Places with lower rents tend to be windy, desolate beach areas with lots of summer overcast. Places in warmer less windy pockets and "youts" running wild have high rents.

$1500 a month for a beachfront house isn't going to cut it. Live inland about 30 minutes away (near a college if you wish) where the weather is warmer and sunny. Few people swim in the ocean because the water is too cold and it's often foggy and windy along the coast.

why beaches are cloudy
Why is the water so cold?

Can you guess why?
Look at the apartments on Shoreline in Alameda. It's as close as you will get to what you want.

Try doubling your rent limit, then you can find something. Summer rentals "near" the beach are available for that much, but than again, refer to cold, windy, and not very desirable.

How often is it foggy & windy along the coast during the summer ? I do know somedays it could be 100 degrees inland & 60-65 degrees along the coast. I would love that.

The comment above about doubling your budget is probably good advice.

Another thing to consider is that desirable rentals are very expensive during the summer months, and are less expensive at other times of the year - so sometimes it's possible to find a rental for a reasonable amount - but it's only available from October through June, because it's already rented for next summer at a much higher rate.

Here's a link to the kind of rental you can find in San Diego - it's a beachfront condo that's available from September to June. It's bigger than what you'd probably need, but it will at least give you an idea of what you get for the money.

$3400 - Beachfront Condo 3 bed/2bath: Balcony/Parking/Furnished (http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/apa/2506962774.html - broken link)

I agree with Ceece's Alameda comment. For your price, it's the closest you'll get to an active beach area for cheap.
