Sorry, Oakland is just cooler than Long Beach. I've hung around both cities many times.

Of course, this is all subjective. There might be people who hate Oakland and love Long Beach.

In my opinion, I really enjoy Oakland more than Long Beach. I think it just has more character and vibe.

Oakland also has a huge port, a bigger airport and also huge corporations and organizations that make it a far more important business center overall.

And seems like a much busier place.

I'm guessing there's no longer a California forum.

That was a nice picture! I like how you can see from the hills to the Bay.

Maybe I forgot to mention Long Beach had a World Trade Center building? It does. It's the United States headquarters for global companies like Pioneer Electornics, U.S. Epson and Gulfstream West Coast. I wouldn't call Oakland a far more important business center. It's port is also the second busiest in the United States. Port of Long Beach - About the Port

Long Beach has more buildings than Oakland. California - SkyscraperPage.com But I do like the density of Oaklands! Long Beach is also a lively city, it was rated 8th most walkable city by walkscore.com.

Judging by the above picture Long Beach looks pretty lively to me.

That doesnt really mean anything fromt the standpoint of business importance, its simply a building where companies can lease space from. The WTC is not a company.

What I find most interesting about this is despite the Port of Long Beach handing far more tonnage overall, the Port of Oakland actually had more total revenue AND a higher value of all assets in 2009(the last year LB reported).

Operating Revenue, 2009
Port of Oakland $317 Million
Port of Long Beach $311 Million

Net Value of Assets, 2009
Port of Oakland $2.602 Billion
Port of Long Beach $2.383 Billion

Oakland is the headquarters city of an actual Fortune 500 company where decisions are made, not a branch office. Oakland is also headquarters of a 'non-profit'(Kaiser Permanente) that has greater revenue than Intel and Chrysler. Oakland has a third billion-dollar company, Cost Plus World Markets based in town as well.

Admittedly this is a sore topic for me cause Oakland's shed 3 Fortune 500 companies in recent years. Safeway moved to the suburbs, APL was bought out by a Singaporean company and World Savings was bought out by Wachovia.

Still, Oakland is also the HQ for the University of CA system which is not a business but a very influential entity in the entire state and world.

Oakland is also the HQ to many cutting edge technology companies like pandora.com which recently had a great IPO, Sungevity which just announced its doubling its DT HQ office space and many others

We have a several-hundred post thread in the SF Forum specifically dedicated to Oakland Business: http://www.city-data.com/forum/san-f...velopment.html

There is a ton of activity and several multi-billion dollar projects that are reshaping the city's urban landscape.

Actually LB is more dense in sum. LOL. It is amazingly dense and I admire that.

OTOH, Oakland exudes an air of 'big city' that I don't feel in Long Beach, which imHo, is a beautiful seaside city that is more like a resort vacation place---Oakland isnt that way(unfortunately I guess).

THE PERFECT CITY WOULD BE a HYBRID OF BOTH.

Oakland does have a larger overall skyline. On a side note, Long Beach has two Fortune 500 companies. Fortune 500 2009: States: California Companies - FORTUNE on CNNMoney.com

It's only a matter of time before it is indisputably ahead or equal to Oakland in terms of financial importance. It's interesting how they developed similarly.

In 2011, Long Beach had ZERO F500 companies.

You really have not provided any evidence to substantiate this claim.

From the perspective of future prospects at least from the vantage point of tech, we need only look at Venture Capital investment for the first half of 2011 to see which city is on the radar of Investors of high tech and other related high growth industries.

Total VC Funding to local start ups received first half of 2011
Oakland $173.5 Million
Long Beach $0
