Long Beach vs Bakersfield (Los Angeles, Belmont: quality of life, living in, zip codes)

No, I haven't had enough of Bakersfield insults yet, so I had to throw it in once more.

There is a rather interesting, well paying job offer in Long Beach. Is LB a good place to live/work? I don't know much about California...just sayin' and apologies to anyone who thinks I should

Go for it. Long Beach would be better than Bakersfield overall and you don't have to reside in the city. You can live anywhere else in the Los Angeles area as long as you're OK with the commute and the higher cost of living.

Long Beach > Bakersfield. Not sure what, other than lower housing costs, would make Bakersfield preferable to Long Beach.

Commuting is something we're not fond of. That's why we'll be thinking this one quite carefully.

Bakersfield was okay, though we only stayed four days. Less traffic, small town feel were the positive things. Pollution was a big turn off for me. Flying out of the little airport was another. We did get a 'bigger' plane because I was not going on that 15-20 seater, but had to change a lot of things to avoid flying in that "winged" lawn mower

I can understand that. But as someone who detests living in big cities, I would lean heavily towards to residing in Long Beach or in the surrounding areas for a better quality of life. Although Los Angeles does have smog issues, Bakersfield has the same problem so they pretty much cancel each other out. Standard quality of life would be better in the Los Angeles areas due to the numerous amenities that are better than Bakersfield.

I think the decision will boil down to what you and family can cope with on a daily basis in Los Angeles vs. Bakersfield.

Just be sure to remember high/decent paying job in Long Beach means you will be able to afford a rat hole studio/1 bendroom (depending how close to the beach you want to be) on the decent side of town.

Cool ocean breezes or stifling heat?

Cleaner air or central valley ag smog?

You might want to check out Signal Hill. Also Bixby Knolls if you can afford it.

Long Beach for sure. Desirable areas closer to the ocean are Belmont Shore, Belmont Heights and Naples. More suburban areas of town in the eastern part in zip codes 90808 and 90815.
