According to page 9 of this recently released pdf:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/defa...013/b13-01.pdf

The threshold for combining is 15% of all workers in one metro commuting to jobs in another metro.

In 2000, 12% of San Joaquin County workers commuted to the SF Bay Area and in 2010 that soared to 18% well past the 15% requirement and so now the Office of Management and Budget has combined Stockton-Lodi with San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland.

So the Bay Area's population per the latest numbers is 8.256 Million, 5th largest in the nation.

The interesting part of that is the despite being 5th largest in population, the Bay Area now has the 3rd largest economy behind NY and LA.

I need some aspirin. loljk

otoh, Stockton's $19 Billion economy squeeked us passed DC-Baltimore:

Quote:

11 Largest Combined Statistical Areas by GDP, 2011

1. New York-Newark, NY-NJ-CT-PA CSA $1.486 Trillion

2. Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA CSA $897.207 Billion

3. San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland, CA CSA $594.977 Billion

4. Washington-Baltimore-Arlington, DC-MD-VA-WV-PA CSA $594.845 Billion

5. Chicago-Naperville, IL-IN-WI CSA $554.511 Billion

When 2012 data is released, I expect to see huge gains by the Bay Area because the economy and jobs improved greatly during the year.

Yep, the Port of Stockton is moving quite a lot of stuff these days. Combine that with big ag, and you've got an economy that's the lifeblood of the region. Sacto better be saying thank you for all the stuff that flows through your ports to them and the food.

Might as well throw Salinas in there as well. Most people in Salinas take jobs in the South Bay.

Or Monterey/Carmel or actually in Salinas and environs. Do you have anything showing over 15% commute to south bay?

Just the original article I posted in the S.F/Oakland forum:

Quote:
With so many workers commuting to the Bay Area, little Salinas was among the leaders, at 1.23 percent
Salinas is a city of 150,441 people, but accounts for 1.23% of all mega-commuters in the United States. I'm not sure if it's 15%, but it's a sizable number for such a little city to make the top 10 of the national list.

15% is the acceptable threshhold, so sayeth the White House.

We don't know if they are mega-commuting north or south for sure do we?

I concede they aren't heading east in great numbers, hehe.

Well the article specifically states "Bay Area" and 50+ miles South would put Salinas mega commuters into King City. Not exactly a huge job hub.

So my theory that they are heading to the South Bay seems to hold true.

You really don't know what you're reading sometimes do you? 1.23% of all commuters in just the Salinas area are mega-commuters, not that it has 1.23% of the entire nations mega-commuters
