I am not Hawaiian myself but I have many friends of Hawaiian descent and they have repeatedly complained, when shopping in California, of being harassed about their weight at middle to high-end fashion centers. What this generally entails is that, while they are not told to outright leave these establishments, they are pointed "down the block" to plus-sized retail stores. Some of my friends are admittedly hefty. Others are no meatier than I am (I am a 147-lb., 5'3" female.) The overall feeling when shopping in California is that there is prejudice against Hawaiians. I point this out only because there has been so much of a ruckus of late about gay marriages in CA. I find it lamentable that in California you are focusing on this, while right under your noses Hawaiians (who are also Americans) are being maligned for no reason whatsoever other than a few extra pounds. Who has witnessed this and done anything about it?

Macy's and other department stores have plus-size departments, so I don't know what the fuss is about. It does sound like discrimination.

Could it be that a salesperson who knows that they don't have anything in stock that would fit your friends is kindly referring them to an establishment that does?

This is not the case. I can quote one episode where a friend, who is not obese by any stretch of the imagination, was moving slowly towards a Prada Outlet when the manager turned the closed sign on him.

It was not closing time, no. The manager, or salesperson, who turned the sign also made a "fat sign" of some kind and pointed my friend to a Lane Bryant. I have heard countless stories of this kind. It is no laughing matter.

Lots of overweight Russians shop at high-end outlet stores like that, and don't get turned away.

I am stymied by this. Hawaiians are our fellow Americans.

Well, I don't understand it, either. It would never occur to me to treat them differently. But these things tend to be irrational. Hawaiians are brown, and they're non-European, so...that's all it takes for some people.
