I was looking at the 2014 California Governor's Budget and ran across the latest California Demographics and was shocked at the breakdown. I did not realize Blacks were only 5.8% of the population and Latinos are now the largest ethnic group at 39%. What do you guys think about this? I still can't believe Blacks are only 6 out of 100 people here in California.

You were probably as shocked about that as when I was researching and visited Pittsburgh,PA and learned that 2.3% of Pittsburgh's population was of Hispanic. Kind of weird for an L.A native.

Actually, that 5.8 percent African American (AA) is not substantially less than before, is it? I don't think the AA population was ever much higher than that in California. We have had a tidal wave of immigration from Latin America and Asia for many decades now, and far less so from other states where there are more AAs. I am not sure why anyone would be so surprised about the 5.8 %.

This is interesting if you haven't already seen it.
List of U.S. cities with large African-American populations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The largest populations of AA's are in the South for the most part and in Michigan. Places like New Orleans, Memphis, Atlanta ,etc.

This is what I am often responding to on threads on CD-people say 'oh, i thought CA was so diverse' especially if they come from a city like Baltimore, Atlanta, Cleveland, Cincinnati, many cities throughout the south, etc...Um, yea, CA is diverse-but there's more than one way to meet that criteria.

Yes, I CAN believe it, to answer your question. Because I've known about the demographics of CA. I am always surprised that people don't know about it, actually. Don't people research before moving somewhere, or know about the state they call home to begin with? LOL. Wikiepedia, anyone?

What do I think about it? Nothing, really. Migration is an interesting thing.
What I also think people do not realize is the USA demographics as a whole are approx:
White 223,553,265 72.4 %
African American 38,929,319 12.6 %
Asian American 14,674,252 4.8 %
Native Americans or Alaska Native 2,932,248 0.9 %
Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander 540,013 0.2 %
Some other race 19,107,368 6.2 %
Two or more races 9,009,073 2.9 %Hispanic or Latino 50,477,594 16.4 %

I wish this was a sticky on the top of every city data forum-lol-so when people are moving somewhere or researching, they might consider...Some folks have this strange PC-rooted mindset that every single state/city/area that is not a multicultural melting pot is therefore racist. From a logical standpoint, there is no way, with the current demographics, that there won't be some areas that are majority white. Also, our corporate/capitalist economy will go with wherever it can make the most money and cater to that group.

the black population decline in los angeles has been substantial in the past two decades as well, lots of people headed out towards san bernardino or to the south.

5.8% is shocking though, i always assumed the state was around 10% black, slightly below the national average.

African-Americans are moving out of California. There was an article last year saying the trend started heavily after the Rodney King riots. It's part of a larger trend of moving to southern states and Texas. I grew up in Houston, Baton Rouge, and cities with larger and more prominent populations of African-Americans, so for me, coming to Long Beach was a bit of a change.

Aren't these projections? The black population stood at 6.6% per the 2010 census, I doubt it has declined almost a full percentage point since then.

The AA population in 2010 stood at 2.3 million, that's highest it has ever been in Californi. It was at 1.8 million in 1980, which equaled 7.54% of the population. Other groups have grown at a MUCH faster rate since then, hence the decline in percentage.

Blacks have been leaving CA for decades alongside everybody else thanks to the blockheads in Sacramento, who've ruined the schools, the jobs market and have contributed substantially to our current drought thanks to their environmental extremist overlords.
