Socially speaking, Sacramento is your best fit. Super friendly, tons of massage parlors, great young crowd in midtown with so many events going on all the time. Concerts, art, coffee you name it. I love midtown. But beware; it is hot, it is dry. I know people always debate this but trust me, it is not like WA (I use to live there). It is a dusty, dry inland city, and the air quality is poor. You will notice those differences immediately. If you can get past that, you might love it.

I agree that Sacramento is the best fit. As for Monterey's weather being similar to Seattle, they are nothing alike. For example, here are Monterey's temps from this past January:

The COLDEST day in Monterey was 57, and the WARMEST in Seattle was 55. Monterey had 8 days above 70F and 2 days in the 80s. Plus plenty of days in the high 60s. There is no comparison between the two places -- in winter, at least.

Yes, one of the biggest fallacies about Monterey is that it somehow has a similar weather pattern to the PNW. That is completely wrong. The fact that we get Summer fog/June gloom and that most tourists tend to visit in the Summer really scews their perception of the area. The fact that the rest of the year is sunny more than not eludes them.

Monterey and the entire Central Coast including Santa Cruz, Big Sur, Morro Bay, Pismo, etc... have a weather pattern much closer to SoCal beach cities where I grew up vs. anywhere in the PNW - 50s-70s year round. Even LA/OC/SD coastal communities get June gloom which sometimes extends into the Summer in certain years, though to a lessor degree than the Central Coast. This Summer in particular we've experienced more sunny, warm days and gorgeous sunsets than any year yet while living here. Here's one from last night. It doesn't get much better than this.

And one of the many warm Summer nights this June:

tstieber,
I commend you on posting numbers and extrapolating from that, and then summarizing what it's really like compared to the PNW.

I am one of those who would not necessarily understand the distinctions between Monterey and the PNW...."it's always cold and foggy in Monterey as far as I am concerned and never gets warm and since it is always so cloudy it must be just like the PNW".

Thanks for showing us how it's different. This is what I've been trying to do with the perceptions of Sacramento; there are important distinctions that set Sacramento apart from the rest of the Central Valley, SoCal and the Southwest and similarities with the PNW in the middle of the summer one rarely pays attention to.

Sometimes, simply numbers such as high's and low's don't reveal important distinctions. Dew points, humidity levels, wind chill, micro-climates and weather phenomenon and duration need to be included.

But positing only high's and low's and showing how often certain temps may occur is better than making simple statements, without backing them up with numbers. It's late I may not be making sense anymore....snooze. :-)

This is interesting to me because one of the biggest fallacies about Sacramento is that it's always as hot as the Southern San Joaquin Valley and that the is air is as dirty. That is completely wrong.

The fact that Sacramento may get the occasional high temp and that most tourists tend to visit in the summer, and fairs, festivals are held in the middle of the summer during some of the hottest times of the day really screws their perception of the area.

The fact that in the middle of the summer, late evening, night and all AM hours sometimes beyond the noon hour Sacramento is has cool as Seattle, Portland, Oakland, and San Jose eludes them. This fact is discounted for some reason and their focus on the high temp for the day no matter how few hours it actually was that warm eludes them.

Nomoresnow: I'm making a huge life changing decision. I'm using this forum to take in some information, and different perspectives. I'm gonna be stuck wherever I move for a while. I'm allowed to be picky. If you don't like what I am posting, I suggest you find a post that you do approve of, instead of trolling my page and being miserable.

So Seattle actually has a great summer, and an ok fall. The other info is great though, thank you. I am actually the most interested in the Bay Area. I have been speaking to my cousin about living options in Berkeley and the safer parts of Oakland. I am definitely going to visit Sacramento, after reading all of these posts. It's also a plus, because I have an uncle in LA. I also feel I would do much better with my own space, so that really limits my options in the Bay. I feel that I have a great amount of information after this forum, and feel much more ready for these trips. I am going on a trip to the east coast in a few days, and when I come back, I will visit some of these locations. Does anyone know if there is a particular time of year, that is better for starting an apartment lease? Thanks!!

Just wondering if you had considered B.C,Canada? Sounds like both Vancouver and Victoria have the mild winters of Seattle, but much, much more sunny days.

Vancouver - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Victoria, British Columbia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Vancouver gets 1,928 hours of bright sunlight annually and sees sunshine 289 days a year.

Victoria, British Columbia 2109 hours,308 sunny days.

The Atwater Village neighborhood in Los Angeles would fit you perfectly!

It's in your price range, it's between two major employment centers in Downtown LA and Glendale/Burbank, it's warm, it's got a really good vibe and it's neat. Lots of earthy young people and hipsters there, lots of neat little shops, bars and restaurants, decent-sized gay population, very open-minded. It's like a sunny Capitol Hill.

Plus, it's near your uncle! I think you would love it to pieces!
