I had always heard that Clovis was snobby, but they have the better schools, so I moved here for that reason. After being here 5 years, I'm finding that people really aren't friendly in MOST situations. Do I really have to endure Fresno schools to be around nice people? Or is it this bad in (nicer) Fresno too?

Hmmm, I have heard both. You always hear of the "Clovis mom" or "clovis girl" that is bought from head to toe, you know they got a bad attitude and they reinforce that belief if you have the misfortune to converse with them. South West and south central areas are ok generally speaking, but if your kid has not been around that group from kindergarten onward, I hear it is really hard to make friends and get in with the various "clicks".

Fresno has parts just as bad, especially around Cedar and Shephard or near Champlain and Perrin. Both sides have jerks and nice people but there seems to be more than their fair share in Clovis, plus you got all the fake wanna be cowboys there to boot! Yeah you got your hat and bots on for the rodeo with your freshly done nails and bleach blonde hair, you ain't fooling nobody!

I had to google where is Clovis. My first reaction is that it's pretty funny that there could be any snobby enclaves along the 99 corridor. But I guess that in itself is a snobby thing to say.

Haha jbunnii, that response may be a case for the fact that all of Cali is rather snobbish.

Sounds like the place has changed a lot since 1978. Back then it was a small town with a lot of people living out of town in a very rural setting. I don't recall there being any special status to living in Clovis back then. Guess times change.

Yes Clovis can be a bit snobby and I never understood why. That was my experience with those whom I worked with that lived in Clovis. I lived in Fresno from 1990 - 1995, and never had any desire to live in Clovis. To me Fresno had much better neighborhoods to my liken. Most homes in Clovis looked cheap, and even their mall look cheaply built. The only time I would visit was when a friend of mine rented a house for about a year because they bought one in Fresno (although they were in the Clovis school district). Oh I almost forgot I would sometimes visit the George Brown gym in Clovis every now and then only because they had a basketball court whereas the one in Fresno didn't.

I think the opinion of people in the area is that Clovis is the Fresno for people who are Too Good For Fresno. So you take your average Fresnan, give them a modest upper-middle class income and a heaping sense of entitlement, and you end up with Clovis (and that little bit of Fresno on the other side of Woodward Park, the Champlain/Perrin area as mentioned earlier).

The attitude is unwarranted. Their address may say Clovis...but it's still basically Fresno.

I think as you head further south and west, that attitude tends to fade because you are getting into the less shiny areas of town, but then you're dealing with some different unsavory elements of the town.

yes, there are some very snooty people in the Fresno area. They're nice country people at heart but they're just...snooty. Which is a nice contrast from the bad people. Diversity can be good.

I think the area is very transient. For this reason people may be a little more defensive than snooty. The newer people may be a little more embellished to try to fit in, as are their children. The number one activity in the Fresno area is shopping. This is evidenced by the fact that the community resembles one huge strip mall.

I guess it's about status or image.

I've lived in Fresno for several years, have family in Clovis and have been around the Fresno area my entire life. I've never run across "snooty" people there regardless which side of Willow Ave they lived in. They're both just big valley towns and valley people are pretty nice. Most people move to Clovis for the better schools, but the Clovis Unified School District runs over a good portion of North Fresno as well. Its not like you have to live IN Clovis to take advantage of them.

For the O.P. - you've lived there five years and have to come to an online forum to get opinions about Clovis and information about Fresno? Really? I would think you could probably do that locally.
