I'm not really sure it needs to.... It definitely could, but I've yet to see a really compelling argument for it.

Because splitting a state is not like splitting an Oreo cookie. It's expensive, and there's not enough justification for such a massive waste of resources.

The same arguments you probably think you have can be made for practically every state...Texas, Virginia, New York, Florida, etc.

Er... what makes anyone think this is solely CA's decision?

A state is not a piece of fruit that needs to be cut in half to be eaten!

The likelihood of this happening is around ZERO so don't waste your breath articulating the 'pros' and 'cons'.

California...The land of fruits and nuts. Do the fruits go to the south and the nuts to the north, or vice versa?

I agree that the state won't split because it's all about the distribution of water. The north has it and the south doesn't, but in recent years that has changed with the drought. Neither half of the state has much water these days.

This always comes up and I always remind everyone that water distribution is under federal, not state jurisdiction so it wouldn't matter if California remained one state or split.

Anyway, there isn't much interest in splitting the state on the whole. The proposals thus far have either been by bitter politicians, or rich techies who want to carve out their own utopia or rural folks in the north who want nothing to do with anyplace there are large cities. None of those are good reasons.
