It gets its name from the Italian language term casino, meaning a "gathering place." There is no gambling at the facility and never has been. It's a show venue. It's also a beautiful and unique building harkening back to 1929.

I'm a CA native and was raised in Newport Beach back in the 50s and 60s. I went to Catalina twice; once on a very large, private yacht and once by public boat. I enjoyed it both times but never felt a desire to return. I would encourage anyone to go at least once. The island itself is beautiful.

Romance? Absolutely! Anytime, anywhere! So we'll still have a good time.
Heh. Well good on you for finding the opportunity sweet spot (so to speak).

Although, to be honest, romance can be found between two willing partners just about anywhere. And has been so if the tall trees are what flips your switch, um ---

All said, a tip: if you tend to motion / sea sickness, why not fly over to Catalina? You're there in a flash before you even have a chance to grab for the barf bag. Not very expensive. Leaves mo time fo da romance!

Enjoy!

I dove it along with all the other dive-able / non-restricted Channel Islands.

It is the southern edge of the serious kelp forests. So you see some species that you won't normally encounter up at Santa Cruz / Santa Rosa / Anacapa Is.

If you like cooler weather and non-touristy things, I would check out Two Harbors. San Pedro has a charter that runs there on certain days. If you go during off season such as winter or early spring, there will hardly be anyone there.

The campground is great and very secluded. When we went there were only two other people there. Avalon gets pretty busy with tourists during summer months but Two Harbors feels like a ghost town comparatively. Lots of wilderness to explore if beaches aren't your thing (although the water there is amazingly clear. You can see the bottom at 80 feet deep), and the bison like to hang out in that side more as well.

You should go. Nice boat ride, nice island. We saw whales up close on the way back.

Arg...right now we're undecided. We've been talking about going for years to scratch it off our "to do at least once" list, but something else always caught our interest.

I've been on Tripadvisor, but it's uninspiring. I dunno, we both feel a bit meh about it, like it would be spending a lot of money to go to walk around Dana Point.

I might check out Two Harbors as someone mentioned. That looks interesting, and peaceful so maybe.

If we don't end up going in the next few weeks, we'll wait till fall.
When and if we ever do go... I will definitely report back! I promise!!
