Where's the country living in Cali?

Cali is a coastal town in the South American country of Columbia, within one quarter of a mile outside the city limits there is country living galore. Cali is also regionally famous for spectacularly beautiful women.

You have some conflicting criteria.
I think you need to come out and travel the entire state so that you can get a real sense of California.
I know you say you want to be near San Diego but if i'm sensing the kind of green and rural you're looking for, i'd say consider Santa Cruz county or thereabouts or explore north of San Francisco ... Sonoma County for example ... wine country.
And if you are indeed from New England and you're looking for an environment in California that somewhat resembles the pastoral nature of that area, then those counties i recommended are even more appropriate ... although California is very different from the northeast and you'll never deal with anything like N.E. weather but it does rain in the winter.

Here's a song for you.
Here in California | Dave Alvin
(they don't all turn brown btw)

p.s. .... "Cali" is not a term that many Californians like ... at all ... some detest it.

Paradise in Butte County, NorCal. It's 12 miles from Chico with the state university, has it's own hospital and there are two others within 15 miles. Treed and beautiful and it gets a bit of snow. Village like atmosphere and a good sense of community with decent schools.
