I'm sick of hearing "Cali"! I was born here and I still live here and I've only in the last several years have heard it called Cali. I've heard "NorCal" and "SoCal" since I was a kid but as far as I'm concerned, the only "Cali" is in Colombia! Calling California "Cali" is about as gay as you can get.

Yeah, it's as obnoxious as calling something "gay".

I'm thinking it came about from Schwartzenegger's heavily accented pronunciation of "Caleeforneea".

I was raised in Porterville, but I am way too lazy to spell it out each time. A lovely name too, I love the sound of it. Much like Caledonia. Mellifluous and exotic. Just too many words for my rapid fire blog prattle.

Wow. You guys get rather upset about the word Cali. I really dont see the big deal. Its like calling Massachusetts, Mass...or Alabama, bama. It's a nickname. It shortness the title and it makes sense. Everyone in the world calls it Cali...except for the Californians. Cali...cali...CALI!

Commence the bombardment.

Actually it's not like that and nobody who lives in Massachusetts refers to their state as MA (or Mass) ... except for Click and Clack when giving their Cambridge address.
It's somewhat akin to white suburban guys wearing their pants pulled down with their boxers showing.
Or, since it's usually people from out of state using that terms, it's just something like a stranger calling you by a nick name ... but the wrong nick name ... it's too familiar ... and almost presumptuous ... and it just sounds silly, and off somehow.

Well I'm from Cali, and I just don't care. Cal is even shorter, and probably best, but reminds me of a guy who sold cars in LA years ago. Cal Worthington, I believe.

"Go see Cal!"
