Hello, my husband currently commutes from Santa Clarita to Goleta for work everyday and as you can imagine, it's getting tiring. We've started looking for places to live closer to his office, but we are having sticker shock in Santa Barbara. Thought about looking in Ventura and also Camarillo, but not familiar with these areas. We have two kids, so the schools are very important to us as well as overall safety. How would the commute be from these two places and are they good for families? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Overall Camarillo is a more affluent place with fewer social problems vs Ventura. Not to say Ventura is bad, it's just not as good in these respects as Camarillo. Of course, the trade off is, Camarillo is more cookie cutter, newer, strip mallish, etc. It's also obviously a longer commute to Goleta than Ventura is.

When I used to live in Santa Barbara, I knew people who moved out to Los Alamos and Lompoc, just to save on rent. They commuted from there to SB. Either of these would have more affordable housing, but it's still a 50-minute drive to Goleta from either of these places.
Buellton is another "cheap" option that would be under a 40-minute drive to Goleta.
Personally, I'd apartment hunt until I found something reasonable enough to rent right in Goleta.
If you have to make a long drive though, living in one of those towns above would make for a heck of a nicer commute than Santa Clarita-Goleta.

Thank you! We have been out to Buellton and Solvang and they are just a little too rural for us. Renting an apartment is really not on our radar. We are in no rush to move, so we can continue to house hunt until we find the right thing for our family. Even if the commute is an hour, that would still be better than the almost 2-hour commute he has now. Keep the suggestions coming!

Are you talking about renting or buying? What size place? Condo OK or only a house? What is your price point?

If I were your husband, I'd try to convince you and the family to move to Carpinteria.

At $.50 a mile plus time spent, how is it cheaper?

Curious.

He's referring to the commute in order to live in a cheaper housing market as opposed to living right in town at higher rental prices.
