I'm at the stage in my move where I'm starting to get quotes for moving out of state. I have a few destinations but the destination I'm using for quote purposes is Iowa City as that's the farthest east I'll be travelling and I find there's a lot of deception and price discrepancies.

For example, one company wants to charge me 1800 for a box to move my belongs and 400 x 2 for unloading/onloading assistance (so a total of about 2600 for door to door service). Uhaul will charge about 1200 to use an appropriate truck (Which factoring in gas, hotel, etc would probably move it up to about 1700-1800 ish for the total move)

Then I got a "professional" quote from a company I won't name and they wanted to charge 15,000 for a move...What?

So my question is, for people living in the Southern California area that have moved out or are looking to move out. How did you do it? Which companies did you use/are using and what prices were you charged/quoted? I would appreciate any input at all from someone with some knowledge or recommendations.

For the record, I live in the east county area.

I'm in the process of doing it now but am moving to California from New Mexico. I'm going with the upack solution. I probably would have went with their relocubes if they were available but they weren't. This means paying for labor on both sides for loading/unloading and packing if you aren't doing it yourself. 17ft of trailer space is $2864 with $69 for each foot after that. The trailer is 28ft. The maximum charge is $3554 for a full trailer.

You then have to look at packing supplies and labor costs and that all depends on how much your moving and how much you can do yourself. I think you'll still come out on top even if you hire everything out versus the traditional movers.

If you do the driving yourself in something like a U-haul -- I suggest you take their insurance offerings. It was the best money I ever spent since I did end up damaging their truck. It can happen a lot easier than you think on a long move when you're not used to the size of the vehicle.

We just paid for our movers from LA to Knoxville, TN: $3799. We used United and are packing and unpacking ourselves. It's going to cost a fortune regardless when moving cross country unless you sell everything and just pack your car.

Do you remember how many rooms you moved for that?
