Assuming that Los Angeles and San Francisco are the top two cities in the state, here are the choices:

San Diego, Oakland, Sacramento, San Jose, Long Beach, ...

This thread is a spinoff of an earlier CvC thread. This is a two part question, and feel free to answer in any way you feel. Personal experience, quality of life, amenities and attractions, etc....

First:

What, in YOUR opinion, is California's 3rd city, and what frames your opinion?

Though I was raised in Virginia, I was born in Sacramento, and also lived in Los Angeles (Expo Park, South Central) during my early elementary school years. I just had the chance to visit Sacramento again for the first time in about 23-24 years. I'd often been under the impression that Sac was underwhelming for its size (2.3 million), but I think I'd like to revisit that...

I've never been to The Bay, but Im of the opinion that Oakland is vastly underrated because of its proximity to SF. It's Metro Division 2015 population estimate is about ~2.765 million, and I think Oakland may have a case as the Number 3 city. Certainly, it has the amenities and stature of a larger city. I personally feel like San Jose is growing and closing the gap with these other cities, but I think it's towards the rear...

I also never been to San Diego or Long Beach. I think San Diego is the consensus Number 3, but how far ahead of these other cities is it?

Second:

What is the hierarchy of the "Next Five"?

Personally, I'm not sure how I would write em. As a preliminary I think I'd say 1)San Diego 2)Oakland 3)San Jose 4)Sacramento 5)Long Beach. But this is subject to change upon more study, don't hold me to that...

As to the voting process, your vote is for the Third City of California. Thanks all, and I welcome and appreciate all debate!

The top two cities would be Los Angeles and San Jose. San Jose is the 10th biggest city in the entire USA and 3rd biggest city in the state, with a population of approximately one million people (San Francisco is #4), and is the administrative center of Silicon Valley; it is the county seat, and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group is based there. Most of the tech companies in Silicon Valley are based in San Jose also.

It really isn't just San Francisco. There is a unified metropolis -- informally -- made of all nine counties that make contact with San Francisco Bay. San Jose is the biggest city in that area, followed by San Francisco, then Oakland. So that's all one region, basically.

So it's Los Angeles and San Jose/San Francisco Bay Area.

The third place might be Fresno. It's probably the dominant player in the agriculture industry in the state.

San Diego, Sacramento, Fresno.

With LA and SF (not SJ) at the top.

Lies and hyperbole are not welcome. There are plenty of cities in the U.S. with as bad or worse crime than Oakland, let alone the world.

I agree with all the cities on the list except for 2. San Jose comes first then San Diego. San Jose is the high tech capital of the world with better downtown, more diversity, Santana Row, Stanford university, more modern airport and better shopping.
