Goes back a long time, though. Remember when cars didn't have seat belts? No smog checks were required? People could smoke on airplanes? No baby or toddler--or now, 5 year old--had to be strapped into a car seat? No labels on foods in supermarkets? Lots of nanny laws, but apparently they're intended to be for the greater good/health of society.

Same as parenting, do you keep your kid at home and shelter him/her and restrict everything you don't want him/her to do or do you, at one point, come to your sense and start educating and training him/her?
Authorities/government should focus on finding amicable, mild solutions or workarounds, at least initially, without eliminating everyone's liberty and freedom, just because <1% was effing things up, then say "It is for the greater good" when the greater number of people are getting punished/penalized indefinitely. That is irrational and unfair.

That line may work on kids and those with 2-digit IQs but not for everyone and certainly not for me (even though it is a possibility that I may have a 2-digit IQ).

I just don't think that having to bring your own recyclable bag is being punished, though.

"Worldwide, consumers use an estimated 1 trillion plastic bags each year—nearly 2 million a minute—with the use time of a typical bag just 12 minutes. Californians alone throw away 14 billion a year, creating 123,000 tons of waste "

(And those figures are from two years ago.)

I could see this coming from years ago. Even if they ban them worldwide I would have to buy plastic bags to live. I cant imagine how the old times lived without plastic.

Whenever I go to self checkout or the supermarket I grab a handful. Over the years I have built-up an almost life time supply.

I curse Democrats all the time because I always forget my bags and there is no way I am going to pay 10 cents each. So it doesn't directly affect me but it annoys me to no end that the stores are making millions on peoples stupidity.

We have too, anticipating this stupid stuff would eventually become law in California. Nanny laws passing in California are pretty predictable.

I'd estimate we've accumulated at least a few hundred for continued trash can liner use.

The local store managers are complaining people are walking out with the store hand baskets... taking their purchases right out the door and driving off...

I was in line yesterday and the filthy canvas bag put on the counter was disgusting... even the clerk mentioned it... the old guy said he was not going to pay for something that has always been provided...

Of course... in a few years he will be gone so end of problem...

When my city implemented I started shopping near work instead of near home because the work market still had plenty of free bags... plastic of paper upon request.

Ummmm, I was just shopping at one of my favorite stores, which just happens to be a vegetarian market & deli. I really like the place and had decided to pickup a few hot entrees, fruit, and Yukon potatoes.

Great, until I got to the checkout and overheard a clerk ask the customer ahead of me if she wanted to pay 10 cents for a paper bag.

HUH?! This market has never used plastic bags, and the price of the paper bag was always automatically included in the overall price of groceries.

Buyer beware, because unless I'm missing something, this sounds like exploitation.

BTW, they also had their own reusable cloth bags on prominent display for sale at 99 cents.

Stores are not stupid, they see a way to make money and ........ say thank you to those who promoted and voted for the law.
