From the article:

Had Los Angeles followed the same path as San Francisco, Southern California would have attracted far fewer working-class Latinos.

If you're into making money and replacing a long-standing culture with boutiques, Starbucks, and unaffordable real estate, you'll love northern California. If you prefer access to some great beaches, comfortable weather, and less stress, San Diego is your place. I've lived in Silicon Valley and I've lived in San Diego. I'll take the latter. It's good for the heart.

I actually like the fact that Southern CA is different from Northern CA....I like the Bay Area, but I wouldn't want the entire state resembling the Bay Area, and each region has their own Strengths and Weaknesses as well as Positives and Negatives...The Diversity of California is what makes this state special in my opinion.

It also cited all of the pro environmental policies, nimbyism, powerful unions, etc as reasons why SF was not attractive to working class Latino immigrants. Do you think socal should adopt that mindset as well?

Those are good points. Plus, there are plenty of Latinos here, just not quite as many as SoCal (obviously fewer overall, and a lower percentage).

One other thing in terms of statistics ... here in the Bay Area there is immense inward commuting of Latinos who live just beyond the Bay Area. Many of them are supercommuters.

So BAhillbilly, are you implicitly acknowledging the obvious about the multitudes of low skilled, uneducated immigrants?

It's true that SoCal has no shortage of low skilled, uneducated immigrants who suck an incredibly amount of fiscal budgeting and have little personal responsibility. It's also true that NorCal (the Bay Area, anyway) has no shortage of highly skilled albeit overeducated weirdos who enjoy smugly and sanctimoniously reminding the rest of the West Coast about their intellectual, environmental, and economic superiority.

Even with these generalities established about significant portions of regional populaces, it still stands that Greater L.A. has a far higher number of world-class colleges and universities than the Bay Area. And, it stands that the Bay Area is the national trendsetter for coddling the willfully homeless, and Modesto and Stockton have hordes of low skilled, uneducated immigrants, too. So, the door can swing both ways.

As Californiaguy2007 said, it's good that north and south differ. I don't want the whole state to resemble L.A., or O.C., or the Bay Area, or Fresno, or even Santa Barbara...

CA just provided a legal defense fund for them
