They're not all right on the sand, of course, and some may be townhomes/condos, but there were listings in "places most of us would want to live" for ocean view homes under $1 million.

Still, I agree with you that I wouldn't recommend that anyone arrive in San Francisco, LA, or San Diego expecting to snag a beachfront home for $200,000. We can all agree that those days ended circa 1955.
Yup, wish my time machine wasn't broken.
When I think of the beach I think of of a house like the one on the tv show "grace and Frankie"
I can't imagine the cost for that house.

It last sold in 2006 for $15.725 million. Worth about 21 million in today's market and I agree with you. Great house

The address is located within a link inside this article about the house and the show. https://hookedonhouses.net/2015/06/1...rankie-thanks/

I love that house, too.

Thanks for the links. That was pretty cool. When I think of the California dream that house sums it up nicely.
I'll never afford a home like that, so,I'll live vicariously though the show

I think it just boils down to what you value and want out of where you live.

My dad doesn't understand how I could want to live in LA, and thinks it's dumb I don't value owning a home to the degree he does. My dad is happiest in my hometown (technically outside my hometown on acreage) with nobody around him and a closet full of guns and his big pickups

I'm the exact opposite. I don't hold such high value on owning a house, so renting isn't a big deal to me. I've always wanted to live in a dynamic, internationally connected city with endless opportunities for activities; both recreational and professional. I dislike owning a car so would like to eventually be able to live without it.

I think if it checks the major boxes you're looking for, you're willing to take the bad with the good.

Your first sentence says it all.
Everyone has different needs and wants and balances it with what they are willing to give up or put up with.

One of the problems today, are the ones who feel like the poster who does not care about owning as many times they are focused only on today and make no plans for when they get older and the things they enjoy now they can't and their pay can drop or not grow enough and then ..............

I have friends who are Boomers who didn't plan and now struggle. That won't change in the future.

Immigration. Most people leaving California in droves are native born Americans.

I’ve always been curious what a drove is. And so what! Leave wherever you live if you hate it. Very unhealthy to live in a place you hate. As for the rest of us; enjoy your new home!

My guess is your term for native born CA Americans is code for whites. Guess what: we have a ton of native CA born folk who are of Mexican, Asian and Italian origin. Please don’t be racist. OK
