since this is in the retirement section, i'd guess it's unlikely to be raising 2 children still

A household with just two adults can get by for much less, as they need to earn $4,697 a month, or $56,361 a year.
for a couple, this doesn't seem too bad for "expensive" so cal

Don't bother retiring here!
Even in the inland valley, the homes are $600K and the condos are $400K if you want a decent area.
The homeless are all over the place, and there is petty crime, burglaries, robbery, and everything else. Thanks to the abolishment of the "Three strikes" rule. Democrats ruined it here, with our governor giving more to immigrants and illegals than they give to our elderly.
Along with that you have beautiful beaches and good weather.

??? Illegalas are not eligible for aid, so what you are saying is incorrect. Same for the three strikes law, it’s still there. Poor elderly benefit from many programs in our state. If you want to retire in CA your best option is avoid the high COL areas such as SoCal or the Bay Area and go east. In my area-a retirement area - the median home price is more like $270k.

Let me just clear up one thing you said. You're correct, illegals are not eligible for aid, however their anchor babies are since they are American citizens. Illegals have lots of children here and therefore get lots of aid including help with housing and food.
Since anchor babies are minors, their illegal parents get the aide to support them. I just needed to clear that up.

Turning more into an illegals in Cali thread than a retirement thread.

I think it's related since unless you live in an isolated bubble, illegals play a significant role in how people live in So Cal including the cost of living. The cost of housing, local taxes, crime, even cost of car insurance are all affected. All this affects people that will retire here.

I understand and I’m not for illegal immigration but illegals also do some positive things for their communities to try to paint them all as just drain to the community and system is not entirely true.

Big deal! I live in Tennessee and decent condos here at $400K and our weather is carp most of the year and no beaches.
