What I'm curious about, is what alphanumeric scheme will they use when the current 9ABC123 runs out at 9ZZZ999? We're starting to get pretty close. I'm seeing a lot of 8xxx123 plates out there.

Will the second character flip over from alpha to numeric? 00AB000?

I would be curious whether the black vintage license plates a bandage precursor for the state to ultimately make digital license plates mandatory? And since they are irresistible for many new car buyers these days they bring in a lot of money to fund the pricy project.

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-sta...-of-california

As these plates can only be installed in the back, they would need a matching license plate in front as California requires front plates in which these vintage black plates fill in the gap as the default color of the digital plates will be black.

I can imagine these being mandated in all new cars in the state by 2023 after they deal with the pilot testing phrase.
Though I always cannot understand why California never thought of making their plates look nicer like some other states. Maybe having the state flag with the Bear be the standard issue plate.

I agree; I like the current plates and also the retro black and gold. I'm not going to single out any state, but the plates from some states are too busy and even gimmicky looking. For the most part, I prefer an uncluttered look.

I did notice some states really messed up when they came up with new design. New York is a perfect example. Its hard to believe how they came up with those ugly yellow plates they have now. Their original plates look much nicer, including the ones with the statue of liberty which was abandoned in 2000 with another plate that is not as interesting but at least better than what they have today.
Our neighbor Nevada seem to have came up with a plate that is less attractive than its original Sierra Nevada plates.

The cursive plates seem to look much better than the old print ones in California. It seems the only significant improvement to plates in California for decades.

Though it appears these are coming to California's roads and a number of other states as well. Who knows when they would be mandated on all cars?

They appears to be talking about this for the last decade. Thats why there appear to be no progress for new plates for a while. But its because they are working on a brand new idea which takes a while to implement.
I suspect the black license plates funds this project. And would act as the front plates when these are installed in the rear.

Our current standard plates are plain bordering on ugly. Remember the "sunset" design from the mid 1980s? They shelved it because the small amount of graphics and color cost a few pennies more to make. Always a bit envious of states that have nice looking license plates. We don't unless you want to shell out money for them every year.

Our current standard plate is amazing IMO. Simlple, very CA feeling, easy to read and not too decorative (who wants a plate that clashes with their car?). We don't need to update and shouldn't waste a penny doing so. The state makes bank offering the various custom plates and unless/until something MAJOR takes place in the license plate arena it should stay as it is.

That's too close to the current trailer plates.

I think they'll reverse the auto plate. 123ABC1
