Yes. Fortuna just finished building a community center for classes and activities of various sorts. One thing that interested me about Trinidad, was its community center and the activities there, plus they have an art gallery, and a museum. For a tiny community, they seem to have a fair amount going on, and a good community vibe happening. Or so it seems on paper, anyway. I'd planned to tour the area in May, but...oh well. I don't know how long people's lives are supposed to remain on hold....?

Anyway, several corners of Humboldt look interesting that way. Thanks for contributing, tikka.

Cool. Lots of creative people in Humboldt, that's for sure.

After immersing myself back into south Humboldt info for the OP, suddenly I'm drawn to Ferndale/Fortuna. I guess it's like they say; the only way to tell, is to visit and spend some time there, and really scope out the various communities. Do you have experience in Ferndale, tikka?

Classy K, you didn't say how near the coast you'd like to be.
If it's sun you want, there's inland Mendocino County -- Ukiah and Willits.
Pleasant little towns, from what I've seen driving through. And more people
and services than coastal Mendocino. The climate might be similar to what
you have in the Sierra foothills (hot summers). Alas, the fire hazard could be
similar too... Mendocino has had big wildfires and, of course, so has the next
county to the south (Sonoma).

Although having a car is likely a necessity in this area, nice to know there are some transportation choices available.....if the car awaiting repair for example

The Clear Lake area inland from Ukiah has had repeated fires. Clear Lake would be good for the OP affordability-wise. The area has its pluses and minuses, but sun, summer heat and cheap RE are among the pluses. And beautiful scenery. Remote, though. OP needs a good hospital. I guess that leaves out Clear Lake.

That is the $64K question. Hopefully in a few weeks, to start there can be some moderation in the shelter in place for some areas of the state.

FWIW, here's a map of California, showing the number of virus cases by county. Mendocino and Lake Counties only have 4 cases each. Humboldt has 50. Trinity has 0.

Thank you ALL, very much appreciate the input! Fortuna and Ferndale and looking more attractive every day. I'm still researching and waiting for the all clear to come up and visit. In the meantime, enjoying the heck out of the very green hillsides down here in the Sierra Nevada area.
