Just curious who runs the best baseball program in the state? If a high school player was looking to target a few programs north or south, who would be those schools.

This got my attention and I see you also asked a similar question about D3? What grade is your son in? Have any scouts reached out to him? What are his coach’s suggestions?

The top programs, most programs actually, even at the JC level, are seeking out players and/or going off recommendations, not the other way around. There’ll always be spots for walk-ons, but I wouldn’t count on it.

In High School/Summer Leagues I had scouts at many of my games. Not only for me, but more often for my competition. That’s actually how I first got noticed and got approached by not only MLB scouts, but college coaches/scouts. I did play D1 for the record.

What’s your son’s end game? Is it to just play college baseball for the experience, or is it for scholarship? I can tell you right now (Well 25 years ago that is) that if you’re seeking a scholarship only about 1/3 of the team is on one, and most are partial. The biggest racket in youth baseball is selling parents that your son can get a college scholarship with training and year round playing. Seriously, look into scholarships given for baseball. Not you specifically, but either your kid is gonna have it or not, and you’ll know early on.

Without more knowledge of your son’s age, ability, stats, my best advice if he receives no offers is to find the worst program in the best division/conference. He’ll get a chance to play, maybe even start, and there’ll be scouts at the games.

Good luck to and your son. And please keep us (or at least me) posted.
