In a twist, a group of investors that includes former Big Lots! and 99 Cents Only Store executives is interested in saving the roster of 99CSO locations across southern California only.

You beat me to it.

That's the first thing I thought about when I saw that post.

It's called People of Walmart.

Besides fashion choices of shoppers, it showcases other crazy things people do at Walmart (for example, changing a baby on the item conveyer belt that heads towards the cashier ).

These investment companies buy retailers because they often have stores in very prominent locations.

Sears, for example, had a store near Santa Monica Pier.

Mark J. Miller, CEO of Pic 'N' Save Bargains and former president of Big Lots, is hoping to save the discount chain after the company announced it was closing all stores and winding down its business operations in California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada.

"It's a match, that we hope, made in heaven," he told Eyewitness News.

If they do get a take over, I hope the store in my hood (NorCal ) will be among those to reopen.

On any thread, I guess I reflexively click to the end. After reading your post, I seem to remember someone mentioning earlier that April 19th is the last day. That's today. I drove by the shopping center yesterday near GFs place that has the 99c only store that I last patronized (Houston metro). I'll be driving by later today. I'll check and see if they're still one.

RMESMH, I posted about that. The one nearest me in Roseville in Placer County (near Sacramento) is closing today. The one in a different part of Roseville was originally closing at the end of May but when I was there on Tuesday signs were posted stating that they were closing today also. I'd previously talked with the management team who were orchestrating the closures at those stores and they said that not all stores were closing at once and to check with one's local 99 store. I posted that info over on the 99 thread on the Shopping and Consumer Products thread rather than this one.

I, too, hope they include our area in their possible re-opening plans. They truly will be missed.

I've been shopping at the 99C store for 20 years. They were the cheapest place to get in-season produce, hands down, as the local farms would dump the stuff that was too ripe to ship on them. I would get 1# boxes of strawberries for $0.25 at times.

They used to have great bargains on expiring or unpopular packaged food as well. I haven't paid more than $1/lb for strawberries, $1/6oz raspberries, $1/head of cauliflower, etc. etc. for 20 years. I used to go to the 99C store and buy 10+ boxes of the various in-season fruits and veggies.

They screwed up in the 2008-2020 years, though. They hired some idiot ex-walmart CEO and he effed up their business model. Pre-2008 I really liked them, after he took over, they started some really sneaky tactics to try to trick customers into overspending or buying overpriced crap. I remember seeing pallets of strawberries rotting on their floor because they jacked up the price to match nearby grocery stores.

I'm sure the dotard that ran them into the ground still got his golden parachute.

I still shopped there, but I'm not that sorry to see them go. When you start trying to screw over your customers you reap the whirlwind.

The timeline for all store closures is 60 days from the date of the announcement, but many stores are closing prior. The one my sister works at is still open, but inventory is very low.

Get THIS... 3 days prior to telling the employees about the closure, the CEO discontinued the severance program that was in place for the managers. Now that's really crappy. They were told that if they work the entire 60 days (until final closings), they would get their unemployment. But the final decision lies with the EDD, not the business anyway.
