I've heard California is very expensive. I was curious....how much rent could one reasonably be expected to pay monthly for a simple, humble efficiency apartment in the major metro areas of the state....Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, et al. Some place nice...on the lower side of the crime scale, etc. Urban or suburban.

Thanks.

Efficiency as in 1 room studio? Maybe $900-1000/mo+ in LA. Probably the same in SD, less in Sacramento, more in SF.

In urban San Diego....

You can rent a 1920s era 1b/1ba bungalow cottage in University Heights for $825. Plenty of other small apartments can be had in the $750-$1000 range. At $700/month you would be scraping the bottom of the barrel of places that aren't total dumps.

Thanks for the responses. Those numbers aren't nearly as high as I was anticipating (with the exception of maybe LA). Is it reasonable to assume the rents become cheaper as you go farther east into the suburbs? For instance, what about places like Walnut Creek to the northeast of Oakland? Or out toward San Bernardino and Riverside (assuming those would be safe areas)?

San Francisco, $1200 for a studio in Sunset or Parkside. Less at points south, down to around $800 in Redwood City.

Regarding Walnut Creek... yes and no. It is generally less to a lot less expensive than SF and comparing to Oakland is dependant on what part of Oakland.

The $700 amount is in the is Borderline Fruitvale/Laurel/Dimond districts

East of Walnut Creek will find many newer homes at reasonable rents... Antioch, Brentwood, Pittsburg and such...

North of Oakland is more expensive in Kensington, Berkeley and Albany and less expensive in Richmond and Crocket and Martinez...
