What is the best town in California for a person starting his career? Would like to be away form the major population centers such as SF , LA or Sacto.
Will be able to work at home as long as I have a fast internet connection. I love mountain climbing, snowboarding, surfing and biking for recreation. Ocean proximity would be nice although a lake might not be so bad.

And, just a thought, with all of the negative discussions about Calif., should I just head off to another western state?

Any thoughts?

What's your budget? I think everything else will follow from there. And you say you don't want a major population center - what size range were you thinking?

I can afford about $1500-$2000 a month for housing. I am not sure about the population size maybe around 100,000 and below? It is hard to say as I need to visit some areas to get a feel on sizes.

You could check out the northern beach towns of San Diego County - Encinitas, maybe - you'd still be near the amenities of a bigger city for when you need it (San Diego) but some of those towns still have a smaller beach town-vibe. The beaches are beautiful, too, and offer some of the best surfing around.
