Probably in the far north where there's no jobs or towns and you live off-grid and dig a well for water.

It depends on what you want to buy. These are all one-bedroom condos next to the beach in Huntington Beach (Orange County) for under $500k (one is below $300k):

2000 Pacific Coast Hwy #204, Huntington Beach, CA 92648 | MLS# S583645

1200 Pacific Coast Hwy #301, Huntington Beach, CA 92648 | MLS# P693150

711 Pacific Coast (Ocean Ave.) HY #319, Huntington Beach, CA 92648 | MLS# C09086847

200 Pacific Coast Hwy #147, Huntington Beach, CA 92648 | MLS# P683899

2-bed, 2-bath condo in Long Beach for $295k

1750 E OCEAN #1013, LONG BEACH, CA 90802 | MLS# 09-395771

1-bed 1-bath in Redondo Beach for $485k

650 THE Vlg #312, Redondo Beach, CA 90277 | MLS# S09078572

1-bed 1-bath condo in Santa Cruz for $359k:

220 ATLANTIC Ave #306, Santa Cruz, CA 95062 | MLS# 80938200

With the way the housing market is heading, I fully expect that within 3-4 years there will be a lot more to choose from.

Thanks for your response. I should have been more specific, sorry. I was thinking SFD, nothing fancy, small lot, 2+2 (3+2 but I seriously doubt it) and out of the BIG areas like the LA-Orange corridor, actually from Santa Barbara up to the Oregon border.

PS I was thinking in 3-4 more years we'd be on another upswing and things would be getting worse for buyers.

Try the 93433 zip code. 500G should get a house walking distance to the beach

93433 (Grover Beach) looks decent. Thanks.

Yes, the Central Coast is a good option right now as some prices have dropped temporarily.

Check out Seaside here in Monterey County. Upper Seaside is actually one of the nicer parts of the city and some homes even have ocean views of the Peninsula.

It really depends on where you need to work. What is it that you plan to do? You can also look above SF. But work is more limited up there.

Nothing. I'm retired. If I had a view like that I'd spend the rest of my life on my deck looking at that! Nice pic!

Yeah, but that picture is somewhat deceiving, good though it is.
You would want to see that area when it's light.
In the day time, driving up or down HW1, i find it to be the most depressing places around.
But i admit, i've only experienced it from that vantage point ... the highway.
Or is that Marina that i'm seeing from HW1?
