I've lived here for 30 years. I recall how proud I was to tell people that I lived in California; the land of milk and honey; our own slice of paradise. Things have changed enormously. There are the ever increasing tax issues, the fluctuating home prices, traffic, the hustle and bustle of urbanized living. But, there's something else beneath all that which I can't seem to put my finger on. Here's what I mean:

Just this week, my folks moved out of California for good! After visiting several states within the U.S. they finally settled for a rural community within an east coast state. Wednesday afternoon, I picked them up from their home and took them to a nearby restaurant. We struck up a conversation with the waitress and told her how this was their last day in California. The blond/blue eyed doll told us she was born and raised in California and could not wait for the minute in which she could permanently leave the state.

What's happened here? What is that one underlying issue that is making most of us turn our backs on the once pristine state of California???
My family and I are finally leaving California in about a month or so.
The continually rising taxes, brain dead politicians, lack of anything remotely resembling political balance, poor schools, poor quality of life, overpopulation (and growing), traffic and obscene cost of living are the reasons were getting the hell out.

California's best feature is it's weather.

If California doesn't shape up it will become the equal of a third world country, which is too bad because it could be the great place it once was as you mentioned. BUT, the brain dead politicians are too stupid too turn this place around, even if they wanted to.

Yesterday we lunched for the first time at a Sonora style restaurant in a small town right on the lake. The food was authentic, homemade and delicious.

Damn Italians in olive garden. When are those non-natives going back to Italy?

ANYONE can get medical care.
Just walk into the closest Emergency Room and they will provide it regardless of income or anything else.

If you can't walk, call 911 and they will pick you up.

People need to make a distinction between medical care and insurance.
There is free medical care if you need it.

You should probably have speelled it MediCal, with a capital "C" (I think that's how the MediCal folks spell it). A lot of people use the word "medical" as shorthand for "medical insurance".

Yes, and then when they send you the bill for that care and unless you're independently wealthy . . . you're in a whole mess of trouble. Insurance is pretty useless much of the time because it doesn't cover much, but at least people don't avoid being treated if they're insured.

I'll trade places with all of you. You can come live in Austin, Texa$$ and take my intellectually-stultifying low-paying job (but hey at least you'll have your low taxes right! Though I'm told property taxes are murder. And you can experience lovely 120 degree summers!) and I'll return to Oakland. Deal? Who wants to trade? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

My bad on the MediCal.

and if you can't pay the bill call them. They will reduce the bill
I went on unemployment once and called them to make arragements to pay the bill in installment, because I could not pay it all off at once.

The guy took my income, mortgage payment, other payments, put them into a calculator and they said I didnt have to pay any more.

What's bugging you, man? I heard Austin has one of the healthiest economies in the nation. Be careful what you wish for with Oakland-you'll find yourself in a place with less space, ruder people, higher unemployment, and more violent crime than where you are now...
