Hello, I will be moving to this area in hopefully a few months. The big question is, Is it possible to buy a piece of land there, for $20,000 now it can be a few miles from town, but my searches on the web havent turned up much. I'm hoping most offers are FSBO therfore most wouldnt be on the web and I'll just have to drive around looking for signs. With that being said, id it possible to buy a home for $50,000 I remodel houses and a beat up one is fine. Is it possible? Now other questions are how long is the growing season down there ha ha I know some is year round, but I'm intrested in vegtable's and fruits. how many months out of the year can you grow and about from when to when. How often does the wind blow? arond here it never stops and thats kinda lame. I live in the dead desert of southern Idaho and am 2 weeks from listing my remodel I plan to be there in about 3 months. I hope I can find something to buy. If any of you can help out I'd love a link.

I had more questions and will get back to them, drama in the living room lol... thanks.

Land that has utilities to the site or relatively close to it is going to go for at least $18-20 sq. ft. So $20,000 would only get you about 1000 sq. ft. Most planning jurisdictions only allow land partitions that meet the minimum lot size for the zoned use. For a residential dwelling that would likely be 5000-6000 sq. ft. If you buy raw land with no electric, water or sewer it might be cheaper, but a ready-to-build lot for much under 100k would be rare.

On cool portions of the coast there is a problem with defining length of growing season. While the frost-free period may be well over 300 days, there might not be enough heat units during the foggy summers to ripen fruit. Some vegetables will also be delayed. Peppers, tomatoes and eggplant will probably be growable only under a hot-cap or in a greenhouse as summers are too cool otherwise (Eureka gets only 409 GDD on a 55F base, so you can see the problem). You can use this database to check the number of growing degree days in Eureka. That will tell you a lot more about the nature of the growing season than will the frost-free period. Click on "Growing Degree Days" under "General Climate Summary Tables" on the left-hand taskbar EUREKA WSO CITY, CALIFORNIA - Climate Summary

Property might be cheaper in Eureka and Humboldt Co than many places, but certainly not as cheap as you were hoping.
