Well my wife and I are almost in you’re shoes only we would give up almost any thing to be able to move with that kind of money backing us to Missouri. In your case first I would research were I could most likely get a job as that is going to be the biggest make or break deal in your plans I believe. No matter were you want to live or why with out it your money will soon be gone. it is a lot more to live out here then back in the Midwest so what may last you say a year there may only take you threw 6 plus months here. The unemployment is high here as others have said but if a place is cheep or not still will not matter with out work. as for SD area never been there so this is only based on were I now live in Fresno but jobs are hard to come by and they do not pay well at all because of the amount of people that will take them for low pay. I have heard about the same for the SD area but as I said I do not live there so I personal can not say any thing but what I hear. right now understand Calif is one of the highest unemployment states in the nation but ya got to move here then understand you may not live were you want it may be were you can find work so tell I found a job I would only get a po box and try to stay some were that I would not get locked into a lease of any kind that way your free to up and move down the line if need be or things change for you. So good luck as it also can be a bit scary I know it was when I moved out of Calif and man I hated moving back but that’s life some times we can not control every part of it like we would like to.

But you guys are forgetting, it isn't a snap to find a job regardless and even 20K can go pretty fast without a solid job waiting for you.

Thanks to all for your great advice! Especially MtnSurfer (Derek) My quest has been a long one but I won't give up. It WILL happen. The more I researched Needles the more I lean toward San Diego. I always thought SD was super expensive, but after looking on CL and Rent.com I see that it's not that bad if I budget. I also see lots of handyman jobs for SD as well. Looks like SD is the current leader.
