Hi,
We are a family of 4 with 2 young kids and a couple of pets. We're considering moving to the Tahoe/Truckee area from a small town in Vermont in order to be closer to family. We love the outdoors and small town living. Can anyone give us some thoughts/ideas/suggestions/pro's/con's? A couple of concerns are wildfires/earthquakes - does anyone know anything about this like how much of a threat these are, etc?
Thanks.

If you're going to live in alpine areas of the west, you need to be aware and have some acceptance that wildfires do happen.
I suppose living right in town would provide you with a bit more sense of security.
And if you live along the coast of California you need to be aware and have some acceptance that earthquakes do happen and that they are not predictable (nor are wildfires).
You don't have to worry about the San Andreas fault if you're up in the Sierra .... well, unless there's like a 10.0? (probably much bigger than that even) or something but, you know, a meteorite could hit New England ... seriously.
So i'm just saying if your family needs and wants to move to the Truckee / Tahoe area, you just can't have that kind of fear 'cause it'll drive you nuts.
Also, though Truckee has something of a small town feel it's not like small town living in New England and much of the Tahoe area feels more like resort living than small town living.
When you are ready to take the leap (and it will be a leap) here's a good way to access housing.
It's $50 for 3 months access and you can pay less for a month or 2.
Long Term Rentals for all Lake Tahoe, Truckee - Housing Connection, rental listing service
Good luck.

not earthquakes, fire is probably always a concern. Verdi, NV is nearby and it doesn't have any trees if thats really a concern.
