South of Oceanside, easily. Far better atmosphere to raise children. Inside or near LA city limits is terribly expensive, generally high in crime, and generally very poor in education.

I'd go with LA, but that would depend on being able to afford to live in a decent neighborhood with access to a good school. LA is a great place for kids IF you can afford it.

If money were NO option I'd probably choose LA. I love Brentwood, West Hollywood, Silverlake. The *only* place in San Diego I'd consider is Bird Rock over LA if I had multi-millions to spend on a home.
