I can't seem to find much information about Watsonville, does anybody know anything about it? Are there any jobs there and the cost of living?

The only good thing about Watsonville is that it is close to Santa Cruz and not as bad as Salinas!

fishin' at Pinto Lake.

Watsonville and its surroundings such as Castroville are mainly agricultural based communities. There is a high hispanic population. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but rather something to be aware of. Crime and gangs can be an issue, though not quite as bad as Salinas. You can look up crime statistics yourself to get a better idea.

As a real estate agent I am sure you are aware that there is a direct correlation to good school districts and desriable neighborhoods. Take a look at Watsonvillle schools on this website. Zoom in to the area in question: California School Performance Maps. You will notice that almost all are rated very low. However Rio Del Mar and Aptos right next door are much better.

Most non agricultural jobs will be in Santa Cruz to the north or Monterey to the South. Although there are the basic service jobs (medical, fire, police, etc...).

Derek is right about Watsonville being an agricultural based communities. However, there is also a good mix of construction and manufacturing companies. Granite Construction, for example, have offices here in Bakersfield and in other states, but the main corporate office is in Watsonville.

The more desirable areas in Watsonville are in the northern part of West Riverside Dr, along Main Street. The areas between Freedom Blvd and East Lake Drive are not the areas I would want to live in. Anything south of West Riverside Dr would also be areas I would avoid, since they are older and haven't been maintained to keep up with curb appeal.

The economy in Watsonville appears to be sustained by largely Hispanics living in and around the areas, which is easily noticeable in the downtown area (Main St area). The areas before the Main St. that converges with Highway 1 have much newer commercial development such as Nob Hill Foods, Office Depot (I think), and many restaurants. However this is based on my observation back in 2005 and monthly visits to the area.

Sometimes it was fun to go up the hill from Watsonville, dinner & dancing at the 'Mt Madonna Inn'.
