I'm a Montrealer who must move to a smaller city in Ontario, where I'll rent a room 5 months per yr (May-Sept). I'm looking for a lower cost, quiet, car-less, a city with some cultural life, good libraries and a few outdoor cafes and green areas . Outside Toronto-Ottawa-Windsor-London, which place (with a Univ nearby) would you suggest?

And if you're familiar with these, please compare Kingston, Hamilton and Burlington?

Forget KWC, Sarnia, Brantford, St,Chatherines
Guelph, Kingston, and Peterborugh are all very nice university cities and Gue & Pet are also quit liberal hippy towns. Stratford is also a lovely city but quite a bit smaller than the others with no university although is only 40km from both London and Waterloo.

Agree on Kingston, Guelph and Peterborough. By the way, Hamilton is actually quite a bit bigger than London and Windsor.

Peterborough is a liberal, hippy town? ROFLMAO

Trent University may have a reputation as a liberal arts university, but the city of Peterborough is has a long way to go before it qualifies as anything close to hippy.

I lived in Kingston for four years and absolutely loved it (just moved out this spring - hope to be back)! Queen's is an excellent school and the area around the campus feels very safe. There is plenty of housing available within walking distance.

Compared to Montreal its a bit less exciting, but overall a wonderful place that is beautiful in the summer!
