I don't drink and I don't like the taste of beer. Years ago I tried an O'Doul's, not sure if you have it in Canada, and to me it tasted so much like genuine beer that it took me 45 minutes just to finish the bottle. So maybe give O'Doul's a try if you haven't.

I drank O'Doul's when I was pregnant, but that was 32 years ago. I liked it, though.

so are you suggesting that the % of the population that is Muslim or Hindu has increased?

According to the 2021 Canada Census it has, but I don’t know if the increase is enough to explain the reduction in alcohol sales. The aging of the baby boomer population may have more to do with it.

While small, the proportion of Canada's population who reported being Muslim, Hindu or Sikh has more than doubled in 20 years. From 2001 to 2021, these shares rose from 2.0% to 4.9% for Muslims, from 1.0% to 2.3% for Hindus and from 0.9% to 2.1% for Sikhs.

Hindus drink alcohol do they not? Canada's East Asian population (regardless of religion) is also increasing, and they definitely drink alcohol.

People may have drank more home during the pandemic, but restaurants, bar, pubs and nightclubs certainly saw a drastic decrease in serving alcohol with closures and limited capacity.

I would think that would show a decrease overall.

It's ironic in this era of LGBT etc. liberation, gender identity, free access to porn, etc. but I do find that there is a subtext of more conservative mores coming back in certain spheres. As usual, human society is full of contradictions.

I mean, they cancelled the green M&M because she was too sexy!

And of course we're less conservative when it comes to pot and more conservative when it comes to booze.

I do think that immigration does affect a country's values, and in a country like Canada with such huge levels it makes a difference when the vast majority of immigrants are at least somewhat more socially conservative on average than the native-born population. And it isn't just Muslims, as foreign-born Christians also tend to be more socially conservative than native-born Canadians of Christian heritage (lapsed or practising).

So what happens is the even if Canadians themselves aren't necessarily socially conservative, many are eager to adapt their way and those of society so as not to offend newcomers or make them uncomfortable.

As a result, alcohol at office parties when staff is diverse isn't as common as it once was. For example.

Some people are even questioning whether a place like a local brewpub is an appropriate venue for a going-away or retirement party, or if the practice of drinks after work isn't racist.

I bet that in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada, there are conservative evangelical Protestant churches led by immigrants.

Default Sober Bars - The Newest Trend

- Everyone is sober.

- No worry about getting shoved, or having drinks spilled on you.

- People are focused on fun and friendships.

- Without alcohol to use as the standard icebreaker, it’s an opportunity to learn to socialize in an
environment where everyone is equal.
