I’ve heard people from other countries refer to particular celebrities (actors, singers, etc) as their national treasure. Who would you consider Canada’s National treasure.

There's way more than only one celebrated Canadian that I'd consider a national treasure and not all of them are public entertainers like actors or singers, some are famous artists, authors, scientists and inventors. Just a few off the top of my head - Emily Carr, Robert Bateman, Margaret Atwood, Farley Mowat, Leonard Cohen, Alexander Graham Bell, David Suzuki, and there's more actors, singers and tv/media celebrity personalities than I'd care to list here. And I think Canada's monarch is a national treasure too.

I asked this question here as a way to learn a bit about Canada. Had never heard of Tim Horton (I live in Lafayette Louisiana). Some famous Canadians I’ve heard of include Alex Tebek, rock bands Rush & The Guess Who, Anne Murray, Michael J Fox, Ryan Reynolds, Alan Thicke, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, William Shatner, as well as notorious Canadians Nickelback & Justine Bieber. There may be more I’ve heard of but don’t remember right now or didn’t know they were Canadians. When I see names here I don’t recognize I go look them up. Notice I didn’t include Dudley Do-Right. Oh, forgot Brendan Fraser.

What makes a national treasure?

In Canada it gets difficult because what we consider a national treasure in the ROC, French Canadians may not. Just being a successful entertainer is not enough IMO. The person has to transgress into something greater.

I don't consider people like Justin Bieber a national treasure, or Alan Thicke or some of the others mentioned here.

I think Zoisite's list is a good start.

It's also going to be generational and some of the people I considered National Treasures are gone. People like Barbara Frum, and Peter Gzowski.
