Hi, I searched through the thread called "US Citizenship" on this forum but I couldn't find out what is required to move to the US for say 6 months or a year just to work. From what I understand, I need a green card, but on all the immigration websites I go to, I can never get a straight answer on what kind, etc... Also, how hard is it to get a green card?

About as hard as finding Bin Laden.
Seriously though I don't know. Do you have any skills? If you don't you might be able to get a temporary general workers visa. (don't know the name) I've heard of Canadian girls spending the whole summer working in Myrtle Beach, SC at a cheap summer job on something like that.
I got my greencard after coming to the US on a fiancees visa. I had my husband sponser me. Do you have a good sponser?? if not it might be pretty sticky. My greencard took about a year to get and quite a few painstaking trips to the ins office. This was before 9/11 and from what I hear it was a breeze compared to getting one now.
As you've noticed from your web searching, the US has a complex immigration system. Hence, there are many types of work visas.
Dreameyes has married a US citizen and has acquired permanent residency status and the accompanying right to work.
The scenario you mention would have you in the US for 6 months to a year, so you're not really trying to move to the US permanently. You need to see if one of the various types of tempory work visas fits your needs, and if you can qualify for one.
As usual, the best site for information is the official government one:

Don't worry about the card. Just get about 15 million of your closet friends together and come on down!
Seriously, I live on the east side of the Phoenix, AZ area and we have a huge Canadian population here for up to 6 months in the winter.
If I were you (hint) I'd start with this site first.
This is a private company, not a US gov't site, SO BE CAREFUL! It might be legit, or it might be a rip-off. It does however explain the types of work visas in easier to understand language. It sounds like you want a H-2B:
