I'm 24 yrs old and well.... the car insurance companies are charging me $$$. I know I'm under 25 and a male but 250 a month!? Is that the best I can get? No tickets in several yrs, the only moving violation I have was back in 05 for not stopping at a stop sign. I drive for a living(class A CDL), no accidents, etc. So tell me. Is 250 the best I can get? And if this matters, though I've been driving since I was 16 I did my best not to be insured(always had the policy in someone's else name) but now I must be insured in my own name. Any suggestions?

Get a car that doesn't need collision and comp. You probably didn't do yourself a favor by "I did my best not to be insured(always had the policy in someone's else name)"

Shop around online. Hit up everything from Geico to Progressive to Farmers'. All insurance companies are not created equal. I recently switched all my insurance (home and auto) from State Farm to Liberty Mutual, got a lower home-owners deductible, and saved over $1,000 per year.

That said, what andyselec suggested is spot on. The car you drive will make a HUGE difference in your insurance premiums.

You need to shop around, but the fact that you've never had your own policy or been named on a policy, is part of why your rates are higher. You can ask them what the surcharge is for that and how long it will last. Generally you only pay higher rates in that situation for the first 6-12 months.

The other factor here may be your credit rating. Pretty much every insurance company looks at your FICO score these days and bases their rates around what your score is. If your credit is average to poor, you pay more.

Another angle is that many of them also look at your education level and employment situation and that can influence your rate as well. Someone with a MBA who works in an office, will pay less than someone with a high school diploma who works in a factory.

I'm not saying that any of the above is right, but those are some of the factors they use in determining a rate.

Until we had house insurance and multi car discount, mercury was always the best price for decent quality inturance for us. Be careful of cheapo insurance. To some extent, you get what you pay for.

Thanks for the advice. I guess the I'll just have to shop around. But wow, sticker shock! If I'm paying over 250 and I drive for a living all over the country w/ a clean record, what is the driver paying w/ several speeding tickets and a couple accidents?
