I cancelled my roadside assistance with Progressive for this reason, I made 2 claims within 2 years and the competitors like State Farm and Geico had price quotes that no longer were competitive with Progressive who did not raise my rates. Clearly the competition saw my road side claims and raised my quotes.
I now use pay per use with VISA road side assistance at 80 bucks per call.
When I am in Canada I use Canadian Tire assistance at 70 bucks.
May I suggest you READ and UNDERSTAND your policy. Not knowing that roadside assistance can impact your premium is a known fact of life. Or at least it's known to those who do basic research. There may be other hidden gotchas you may not be aware of.
Yep! We all know, or at least we should, where the devil like to live...in the details.

That's over $3,000/year for minimal coverage on one vehicle. We pay every 6 months but for 2 newer cars, one classic car, and a travel trailer, all with full coverage the total annual cost is $2,786. That is with the most recent bills after a rate increase over last year that was about 12%. Of course where you live and the crime/accident rate there, as well as credit score, and replacement parts for the vehicle affect the rates. Has the same kind of increase happened to your friends and relatives living in the same area? Look at the crime rate there, has it gone way up?
Yeah, roadside coverage is a cheap addition to your policy....until you use it. Better off with AAA for that.
I totally agree. Any claim at all on your insurance is likely to raise your rates. I'm surprised people don't figure that out on their own.
I never really expected my car insurance to cover things like roadside assistance, towing, broken glass, or things most of us would consider routine maintenance. I thought car insurance was for when your car was wrecked and was just there to cover property damage and personal injury.
So to recap, their rate didn't increase by all that much....they got reclassified because of the multiple roadside assistance claims.
Their agent *should* have told them that when they called.
The state approves all rate increases, there was no way the state approved an almost 100% increase or anything near that so the reclassification makes total sense.
OP, switch companies.
It's really simple folks. Insurance is hyper-competitive, shop around.
I believe you've solved the mystery. I did call roadside assistance out at least 3 times within 8 months.
Get AAA for roadside assistance.
If you aren't taking AAA's safe drive courses, start doing so. You will get a discount on your insurance. I take one every 3 years. I pay $105/month for collision and comprehensive on a 2020 Jeep Renegade. My poiicy is through Travelers Insurance.
